The Trust has five (5) main criteria for funding environmental mitigation projects. Applications for funding are required to demonstrate how a proposed project will satisfy the criteria as listed below:

  • Demonstrate consistency with the Wairakei-Tauhara Hapu Environmental Framework Plan; and
  • Active involvement of an individual or individuals who whakapapa to the hapu represented by Nga Hapu; and
  • Maintenance and enhancement of Nga Hapu's relationship with their waahi tapu and other taonga affected by the utilisation of the Wairakei- Tauhara Geothermal System; and
  • Incorporation of the broad definition of 'environment' contained in Section 2 of the Resource Management Act 1991 in respect of the Wairakei-Tauhara Geothermal System (which includes the social, economic, aesthetic and cultural conditions which affect ecosystems, resources and amenity values), and/or particular cultural and resource management values held by Nga Hapu (including wahi tapu, mahinga kai, taonga and mauri) in respect of the Wairakei-Tauhara Geothermal System; and
  • Mitigation of adverse effects on the environment, as defined in the bullet point immediately above, caused or contributed to by Contact's operation of the 2001 Consents.
