1: Tutemohuta Wananga

A series of weekend wananga, monthly, around cultural knowledge and history of Tuwharetoa tangata whenua, mana and mauri. The wananga are seen as important to ensure the survival of Ngati Tutemohuta. 12 weekend wananga aimed at upskilling and empowering the whanau of Pakira Marae. The wananga will  cover marae tikanga and kawa, motetea, waiata, kapa haka, te reo, whaikorero, karanga, whakapapa, ture whenua, ta moko and mahi toi.  More.

2:  St James Church - Taupo Maori Mission  repair and repaint

The St James Church is the oldest church in the Taupo District at nearly 120 years old. It was built and donated by the Maori people, particularly the Pitiroi family. The church is looked after by volunteers. The church is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. Services are still held every week with volunteer ministers. This project involves the repair of rotted weatherboards and to clean, prepare and paint the outside of the church walls, windows, doors, and roof.  More.

3. Wairakei Cluster Project

Ngati Tuwharetoa has mandated Ngati Tuwharetoa hapu forum to negotiate Treaty of Waitangi claims with the crown. This project involves getting hapu up to date on claims status, gathering info on what Taonga hapu seeks to have returned and assist hapu engage in the forum process. The project will involve some desktop research with claims, meeting with claimants, pulling together existing tribunal and other reports. This work will be combined with GIS mapping and including database of crown lands. Hui will be run to present findings as well as presentation from the Claims negotiation manager and forum representatives.

4. Ngati Rauhoto Marae repair and refurbishment

This project involves meeting house and sleeping house site inspections, removal and replacement of the roof, increased roof cavity, insulation with ecofleece, installation of heat pumps, carpet, rewiring and paint for volunteers to paint buildings internal and external. It also includes some appliances for the Marae.

Projects approved for funding in the first round of funding

1. Te Roopu Kaituakitanga o Nga Mana Whenua

The project is a Rangitahi at Risk Wananga. Bringing the youth back to the marae and teaching them the meaning and advantages of Maori values. Using whanau involvement, exposure to positive Maori role models and involve young people in development of the programme, learning within a Maori environment � Five residential wananga at Rauhoto  Marae.

2. Maroanui Marae extension & repair project

The second stage of the Maroa Marae renovations is now complete with new wheelchair ramps and extra steps being installed up to the front decks with hand rails on either side.

The back deck was roofed, reinforced and new railings and steps were installed. Awnings for a manuhiri paepae were installed as well as a covering for the front of the wharenui and roll up clear blinds for the back covered in deck.

3. Otumuheke Enhancement

Funding of stage one of a two stage project. Stage 1 of the Otumuheke spring and steam valley enhancement involves the construction and installation of a viewing platform and safety fencing. It also involves the research of the histological origins of Otumuheke, geology, flora and fauna for interpretive display boards at the viewing platform. Stage one also includes planting around the platform and the carving, installation blessing and unveiling of a Pou. If geothermal sites are accessible to hapu they can learn of their special place in the environment and culture. They contain rare plants and microorganisms that constitute an important part of biodiversity and special nature of tenei rohe. Access to experience this Taonga will promote understanding and encourage the concept of Kaitiakitanga among manawhenua. Enhancement will protect the ecosystem and preserve the mauri.
